Who Do You Look Like? ~Pastor Benjamin Chung
I'm not asking about your external features, like which parent or relative, or if there’s a movie star that everyone mistakes you for. That said, how we present ourselves is related in some ways on how we dress and prepare ourselves in the bathroom in the morning. The deeper question I am asking is, “Who do you imitate?” Turning the question around just a little bit, “Who do you have to be thankful for?” or “Who has been a great impact in your life that you can go and speak to right now?” This can be a relative, a teacher, a friend—someone who has been in the role of an advisor or mentor to you. The individual maybe a Christian or not a Christian. The person may even be moral or immoral. Hopefully the person does uphold good morals and has a strong character. And if so, thank them. Especially if the person is still around to receive the “thank you”. (I’ve left some space below.) As the dangers of COVID have dwindled down, we might forget how it was when we kept in contact with the people in our lives that we love and care about. With thanksgiving approaching in four days, set aside some time right now to list a few people you want to call on Thanksgiving and contact them on thanksgiving. If you’re going to be busy that day—I know I will be—remind yourself to call them during this week. Set a reminder on your phone. Tell them what about them you remember and imitate.
Hebrews 13:7 (NLT) says, “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” The individual might not be a leader in the strictest of terms, but still someone who set an example of what you wanted as an outcome in your life. Then, just ten verses later, we are reminded again of the purpose of those in our lives who are leaders. “Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit” (Hebrews 13:17). For those who have direct contact with these leaders, also think about what your own actions are and if you are doing as they say so that they can give praise to the Lord, rather than pray with sorrow. If there are any changes that need to be made, make them quickly! And don’t forget to contact the people in your lives that made a difference. They’ll be thankful you did.
